Cupid is exhausted, the supply of salmon may not recover
Association of indigenous peoples of the North Khabarovsk Krai, with the support of WWF Russia surveyed the spawning grounds of Pacific salmon in large tributaries of the Amur river. The expedition was undertaken to determine occupancy of major spawning grounds for autumn chum salmon.
In recent years, the number coming into the tributaries of the Amur river on spawning Pacific salmon, particularly summer chum salmon decreases. This topic is regularly discussed in social networks, citizens ‘ appeals on this issue repeatedly received and WWF Russia. The situation is also confirmed by the results of the survey of the population living on the tributaries of the Amur river, which is held in October of this year, the student squad of nature protection in Primorsky and Khabarovsk territories and the Jewish Autonomous region.
Factors that may be the reason for the lack of fish on the spawning grounds and overfishing, there are several. For example, if the forecast by the amounts of chum and pink salmon are too high, then fishermen who legally made their quota in the lower reaches, you can leave the spawning grounds empty. To prevent Perelomov, it would be reasonable to see full real spawning ground for salmon and is it possible to continue fishing. The resulting data can be used to generate quotas (norms) on the catch of salmon in the Amur river, which in this case will be calculated based on the number of salmon actually spawned in the tributaries.
Government regulation many years did not take into account spawned fish on the spawning grounds. With the support of WWF Russia in the Amur river basin this year, worked through a system of public monitoring, which involved pre-trained representatives of indigenous peoples.
First, in September, representatives of the Association of indigenous peoples of the North Khabarovsk Krai visited in the expedition to the lower reaches of the Amur river to monitor the situation on the river and in the estuary of the Amur river in the autumn Putin 2018. They conducted an evaluation and analysis of the number of mother ships on the water, small boats, stationary fishing gear and compliance with fishing regulations and restrictions imposed by the Commission on regulation of extraction (catch) of anadromous fish species. In addition, activists have collected data on the actual catch of autumn chum salmon, and identified potential threats to the passage of salmon for spawning.
— The positive effect of the expedition on the passage of salmon for spawning. Information on carrying out independent public monitoring has increased the motivation of regulatory bodies, industrial enterprises, authorities of fisheries more responsible approach to conservation activities. On the revealed infringements the information sent by the expedition members to law enforcement authorities, the Amur territorial administration Rosrybolovstva, the Khabarovsk branch of TINRO, VNIRO, says Love Ozal, President of the Association of indigenous peoples of the North Khabarovsk Krai.
In October 2018 public men were made to field collection of data on filling of spawning grounds of autumn keta at the end of spawning in three major tributaries of the Amur river: Amgun, the Anuy and the Tunguska. For this work consisted of three brigades of volunteers. The length of the route is 200 km through the ducts and the main channel of the Anyuy, 1000 kilometers along the Amgun. People traveled in rubber boats and flat-bottomed wooden boats with outboard motors, floated on poles along riverbeds, walking, ground transport on logging roads and off-road.
Were surveyed more than 10 plots spawning sites on each of three tributaries of the Amur river. The average filling of the autumn keta at spawning sites surveyed Amgun was 0.12 copies per 100 metres length of the river, Anyuy average density 0,076 copies at 100 meters. It is very small while the norm for fall chum salmon 50 copies at 100 meters. Not all data is processed but it is already clear that the situation in Tunguska is not better than the other two tributaries.
— Surveys showed that the density of the spawning population throughout the basin of the Anyuy at the moment tends to zero. A similar situation we are witnessing on the Tunguska and even on Amgun. At the same time in 2018 the users have given permission for an additional 2500 tonnes of autumn chum salmon in terms of its weak moves. However, the volume of catch may indicate an increase in the number of salmon only indirectly. Fishermen who legally made their quota in the lower reaches, you can leave the spawning grounds is empty, and then on the return of juveniles after four years and speech can not be. It is important to take urgent measures for regulating the catch and distribution of commercial loads in the Amur. Today, sustainable fishing in the Amur river is vital to the conservation of wild salmon, – says Olga Kvitko, coordinator of projects on especially protected natural territories of the Amur branch of WWF.
Another significant factor contributing to the decrease of fish on the spawning grounds, such as poaching, because it is an additional burden on the stock of salmon. During the public monitoring at all three tributaries of the Amur river had traces of poaching. A survey of the coastline on the river Anyuy revealed the cast of the network traces of unidentified persons for the extraction of fish is garbage, clothes, gloves, rope, damage to soil and vegetation. On the Amgun river across equipped camps, debris and continue to operate a single fixed network.
— Fish is very small. It is possible that the population of fall chum salmon in these rivers eroded completely. In subsequent years we will continue this work, which shows real level of reproduction of Amur salmon, says Love Ozal, President of the Association of indigenous peoples of the North Khabarovsk Krai.
Fisheries conservation of the Amur river — the main objective of sustainable fisheries management. Like any economic sector, fisheries must be scientifically justified and must ensure the preservation of the ecological and social functions of salmon. Sustainable fisheries in the Amur river is vital to the conservation of wild salmon. It is necessary and the indigenous population, whose life is inseparably associated with the Amur river and fish, and should be a priority for conservation.
Recall that the procedure of selection of fishing area in the Khabarovsk region has simplified. The participants of the electronic auction will be able to “slice” plots of their own, not choose from a drop, as it was previously. This year was put up for auction are 46 fishing area of over 9 thousand hectares, of which 36 with a total area about 8 thousand hectares have already been distributed.
