In the year of the salmon with the record catch
International year of the salmon, the discovery of which was announced at the site of a fishing forum and exhibition in St. Petersburg, already saw a record catch of Russian fishermen in the far East.
Environmentalists and scientists will focus on the salmon
September 15 in the framework of the second International fishery forum and exhibition of the fishing industry, and seafood technology was held a solemn opening ceremony of the International year of the salmon. The project, initiated by the Commission on anadromous fish of the North Pacific ocean (NPAFC), supported by Russia, USA, Canada, Japan and South Korea. Then this initiative was joined by the intergovernmental Commission for the conservation of salmon in the North Atlantic (NASCO), and other regional organizations.
As the correspondent of Fishnews, the start of the International year of the salmon symbolic blow to the ship’s bell was given by the head of the Agency Ilya Shestakov, President of NASCO Johannes Hansen, President of the NPAFC Suam Kim and a representative of Vancouver island University Richard Beamish. The need for this project, the researchers and environmentalists began over a decade ago. Cooperation between countries will provide an opportunity to clarify many aspects of the ecology of salmon, the study of which requires large resources due to extensive habitat of these fish and their complex life cycle.
In the framework of the International year of the salmon – until the end of 2019 is planned to implement complex of measures aimed at study and conservation of salmon. The program includes a scientific expedition, measures to promote research and environmental education, expansion of information exchange on the status of populations and the production of salmon.
In particular, next year should be organized an international expedition in the North Pacific ocean to study the conditions of wintering and survival of Pacific salmon in the ocean phase of their life. An important component of the project also remains the fight against IUU fishing and control of fishing.
Red fish is cheaper
A day earlier, Ilya Shestakov told reporters on a record in the history of observations of catch of salmon in the far East. “There is now a record catch caught about 620 thousand tons, the record was 530 thousand tons in 2009”, – reported the head of Rosrybolovstvo.
He called the situation with the storage facilities and fish processing complex, “because industry was to record such approaches are not ready,” but noted that the situation is gradually returning to normal. “Thanks to the work of staff and prompt action was able to deliver fish in large volumes in the refrigerator in Primorsky Krai”, – said the head of the Agency.
“In General, I look to the future with the prospect because escapements of the maximum required – 100%, this is very important,” he reassured Ilya Shestakov. He also called delusional rumors about the destruction of fish, to avoid falling prices.
“The price of the Kamchatka Peninsula 60 rubles for pink salmon, is lower lower, – said the head of the Federal Agency. – The fishermen as possible – all that was possible, seized the salmon, in order to put it on the market. Now in wholesale warehouses in Moscow – 110 rubles. The price dropped almost 50%, so I think that here the fishermen are all made, even in a good year”.
