What kind of motors were in the Soviet Union

With electric outboard motor I first became personally acquainted in childhood, in the 80s. Soviet industry such motors were not allowed, and my father made his drawing of the famous book “100 jobs for skilled hands.” Motor design was brilliant in its simplicity: a 12-volt DC motor inside cans-housing, spun brass propeller mounted on a shaft of the motor. The design looked pretty ridiculous, but still for the time it was a real technological breakthrough! Easy and convenient electric motor had a lot of advantages over manufactured then a two-stroke petrol engines with a capacity of 2 horsepower: “salute-2” (“Sputnik”) and “Breeze-2”. “Salute” in the environment of vodnomotornikov were called “Designer “DIY”, and “Breeze” as “materkom” and do not call.

The motor was incredibly simple and reliable in operation and, despite a capacity of just 0.35 kW, confidently pushed on the lake inflatable “VEGA” with a wooden transom. I’m not talking about the fact that the engine worked almost silently, allowed to drag along the lake path, and also to keep the boat in one place. The main drawback of the motor leaks a homemade cover and a car battery, which is very quickly discharged and began to crumble under heavy loads and high humidity.

Modern electric motors

Make it impractical, since starter batteries are, by definition, is not intended for use as a traction battery. And it is absolutely unacceptable to use the same battery for the boat and for the car.
