Kamchatka ecologists and students will test a new technology for the reproduction of salmon
On the Kamchatka Peninsula experience the technology of reproduction of Pacific salmon in standalone incubators. Experts hope that the new method of breeding is an alternative to fish-breeding plants.
According to the world wildlife Fund (WWF), tests are conducted by the students of Kamchatka state technical University (Kamchatgtu), with the support of the Foundation and specialists from the North-East of the fgbu branch “Glavrybvod”.
Study participants placed a thousand eggs of chum salmon in three self-contained incubator, one of which was designed by students Kamchatgtu. Then capacity was installed in the stream channel, occurring in hatcheries (hatchery) “Paratunski” in the Elizovsky district of the region. After 2-3 months when the fish embryos develop to the larval stage, the incubator will open. As larvae specialists will determine how the processes of development and whether it is possible to recommend this method of artificial reproduction of salmon in Kamchatka, or should look for other technical solutions.
“The goal of the experiment is to test the technology using the standalone incubators for reproduction of Pacific salmon. Similar experiments of our colleagues have carried out on Sakhalin and in Karelia. But the specifics of Kamchatka rivers, watercourse, requires verification of the suitability of the technology for our region. We will check the suitability of two types of incubators used in other regions, the incubator, the design of which was developed by our students,” explained head of the Department “Water resources, fisheries and aquaculture” Kamchatgtu Alexander Bonk.
As said the coordinator of the Kamchatka branch of WWF of Russia Sergey Korostelev, on the Kamchatka Peninsula there are streams and rivers which eroded the population of salmon, but the construction of a full fish hatcheries on them is neither economically nor biologically feasible. The participants hope to fill these river fish will be using incubators. With the prepared eggs they will be installed in the upper reaches of the rivers. After appearing in hatcheries, fingerlings, juveniles will be produced in the river.
