Scientists will study the potential for Russian fisheries
Formed a long-term plan of marine scientific expeditions of the Russian fleet to 2030 As noted in the Agency, first and foremost it is a study of the little-known stocks of mesopelagic and deep sea species of aquatic bioresources.
On priority marine international expeditions and plans of the Russian scientists to study the resource base of the oceans, the Deputy Minister of agriculture, head of Rosrybolovstvo Ilya Shestakov said at a meeting of the Marine Board under the RF Government. The event was held in Kaliningrad.
For krill in Antarctica
At the end of 2018, the Agency will begin a scientific expedition to Antarctica to study the status of krill stocks. The research will continue during the 2019 – 2020, said Fishnews in the press service of the Federal Agency.
During the first scientific flight of the courts Rosrybolovstva to Antarctica will be studied not only the prospects of the fishery: the focus will be in particular on the development of technologies of waste-free processing of krill. “This is a huge raw resource for the production of food products, animal feed, and pharmaceutical products”, – said Ilya Shestakov. Permitted global catch of krill is more than 5.6 million tons per year, is actually produced only 250-300 thousand tons. The Russian fishing fleet does not work on krill fishery for more than 20 years, according to estimates Rosrybolovstva, underutilized resource is from 5 million to 15 million tons.
The research will involve scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences in accordance with the agreement, which was concluded in September 2018, the Agency and RAS.
The expedition is also expected to assess the stock of Argentine squid in the southwest Atlantic.
Furthermore, 2019 planned important international survey for the study of wintering Pacific salmon in the framework of the “international year of the salmon”. The study will cover the waters off the coast of Russia to North America. Will bring together experts from the Russian Federation, Canada, USA, Japan and South Korea.
Science promise a new court
Ilya Shestakov noted that the previous three years there were difficulties with the financial support and organization of scientific flights. “In 2018, the situation has changed dramatically. The Russian government allocated additional funds for the expedition. In addition, we have completed the consolidation of its research fleet in the far East that allowed to identify the scope for expansion of marine scientific flights to the most important Russian Pacific basin,” – said the head of Rosrybolovstvo.
In the short term, the Agency has planned the construction of new research vessels, the design of the first NIS to be completed this year.
In 2018, was organized by the joint Norwegian-Russian ecosystem survey in the Barents sea and adjacent waters of the Arctic ocean to study the resource base in the Barents, Norwegian and Greenland seas. Russia, together with Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and the EU participated in the international expedition to assess the populations of herring and blue whiting throughout the whole range of the Barents and Norwegian seas – from Iceland to the New Land. The results of these flights are used by the Russian Federation and ICES to determine the total allowable catches (TAC) of common stocks, as well as to justify the position of Russia in the framework of bilateral international Convention and agreements in the field of fisheries.
This year, in accordance with intergovernmental agreements with Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and Guinea-Bissau, Russia has conducted two comprehensive expeditions on stock assessment of pelagic fish – horse mackerel, sardine, mackerel, European sardine.
Huge reserves for fisheries
Work continues on the development of prospective plan of the Maritime expeditions of the Russian scientific fleet until 2030, first and foremost, this study neglected stocks of mesopelagic and deep sea species. According to expert estimates of biomass, the annual catch of these objects in the ocean may be more than 200 million tons.
“At the moment by regional fisheries management organizations there is no limit on their catch, the development is constrained only by the lack of efficient instruments of production and processing technologies. Research will solve these questions”, – noted Ilya Shestakov. In addition, the task is to study the stock status of skipjack in the South Pacific ocean.
“It is important to increase the presence of the Russian fishing fleet in the World ocean. This will ensure the Russian fishery complex of additional resources, to increase fish production both for the saturation of the domestic market and for export”, – concluded the head of the Agency.
