The trouble came from where it was waiting for
On the background of a great work of fishermen, Western Kamchatka, produced about half a million tons of salmon, this message will understand, maybe a few.The fact that not fishing is the primary task of the whole fisheries industry and conservation of the spawning stock, providing the existence of this complex in the century.
But today’s news confirms the worst-case scenarios of fishermen, who yesterday did not believe neither the Agency nor the Government of the Kamchatka edge or in the Kamchatka Institute of fisheries and Oceanography.
“Immediately on the catch of coho salmon within Kamchatka-Kuril and West Kamchatka subzones, indeed, draws attention to the fact that in the Northern part of the coast the catches of this species is higher than in the South. In 2018 the removal of coho salmon on the RPU, confined to the rivers Oblukovina, Kolpakova and thieves (Western Kamchatka subzone), in the conduct of commercial fishery totaled 1621 t, and to the rivers If, Pymta, Kikhchik (Kamchatka-Kuril subzone) – 538 T. this situation is directly connected with the orientation of pre-spawning migrations of coho salmon in the coastal waters of West Kamchatka, which cyclically migrates and redistributed in the sea of Okhotsk, North to South.”
This, for those who understand real ecological “bomb”.
Throughout 2017 on the grounds of the Agency, the State Duma and the Federation Council continued discussion about the need to ban commercial fishing Gill nets where before were fixed Maritime fishing-nets – that is, from the Islands of the Northern Kuril Islands (Shumshu, Paramushir), where these Gill nets are already being used in the regime of drift-nets to the mouth of the river of ICHA to avoid this ecological disaster – the transit of overfishing, migrating first through the first Kuril Straits, and then already from the sea of Okhotsk along the Western coast of Kamchatka from North to South, coho salmon.
Solutions “on top” was accepted, but it was not even half-hearted: to save, at the request of the government of Sakhalin drift arbitrariness in the Northern Kuril Islands, the Kamchatka Peninsula (probably for internal strife, on the principle of “divide and conquer”), and even left a “Gill preserve” North of the river Thieves – that’s the one area where coho and makes their migration from North to South in reference to the river – Kohl, Kikhchik, PIMCO.
To do this in any case was impossible, – and what persuaded the fishermen practices. But the government of Kamchatka, while agreeing with the decision, and officials of the Agency who issued the verdict, considered in his own way- and here’s the result: a “Gill preserve”, putting countless “walls of death” celebrating today’s victory – they now total catches due to transit coho salmon exceeded a thousand tons, and the catch on the river Since amounted to only 20 tons.
What does it mean?
And it means only one thing – that the status of stocks of coho salmon rivers Since, Pinta and Kikhchik, which are reference (i.e., basic science) rivers, which define the overall condition of the salmon stocks of Western Kamchatka – should cause alarm not only among some fishermen.
If you do not take swift and drastic decisions, the threat of complete destruction of the transit stocks of coho salmon in Western Kamchatka is becoming more and more real.
And the decision in this case can and should be only one – a complete ban on industrial use of Gill nets from the Islands of the Northern Kuril Islands (Shumshu, Paramushir) to the mouth of the river of ICHA.
And this decision should be taken as a matter of urgency: next year will be lean for zapadnosibirsky pink and the main target species here will be now only the most valuable, but not as plentiful as pink salmon, sockeye salmon, chum salmon, and, of course, and coho salmon.
Or we will continue to live by another rule: “the trouble has Come – open the gates…”?
